Water shortages are becoming real for residents and actually drying out the taps. Over the weekend parts of Joburg and Tshwane were without water - reportedly as a result of restrictions from Rand Water. Midrand, Diepkloof and parts of Soweto were in danger of running dry today. Municipal authorities have pleaded with City of Joburg residents to reduce their water usage to avoid restrictions being increased to Level 3. To discuss we're joined by Hilgard Matthews from Joburg Water. For more news, visit: http://www.sabc.co.za/news

As drought tightens its grip residents of Johannesburg who use more than 20 000 litres of water a month will have to fork out more starting from September. This comes after a directive from the Department of Water and Sanitation to the city to reduce its water usage by 15% with immediate effect. But are we doing enough to protect our water sources across the country? Bridget Corrigan is the Bridget Corrigan Source to Sea Programme Manager at the Endangered Wildlife Trust and shes on the desk this afternoon. For more news, visit: http://www.sabc.co.za/news

When it comes to the incompetence for delivery of service, apartheid has been the number one cause for municipalities failing to deliver. However despite your political alliance, I’m certain that if you are really honest with yourself, you would confirm that many of the issues we face are definitely due to the incompetent staff. If I were to give an award based upon hopelessness, it will definitely go to Joburg Water! When you search Joburg Water and click on the page about who they are, it notes: Johannesburg Water SOC Ltd (JW) is a municipal entity incorporated on 21 November 2000 and commenced business on 1 January 2001 as an independent company, with the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) as its sole shareholder. JW was formed following the iGoli 2002 Transformation Plan, an initiative led...
About 100 suburbs in the Johannebsurg Metro will have reduced access to water for about 25 hours this weekend. Rand Water says water supply in suburbs across Johannesburg, Randburg, Roodepoort and Soweto will be affected. The cut takes place from early Saturday afternoon up to Sunday afternoon due to maintenance at the Eikenhof pump station. Rand Water will continue to supply water into the system at a reduced capacity, but there might be poor pressure and no water supply experienced in the affected areas. The City of Johannesburg is currently under level two water restrictions, and with the demand for water rising as high as the temperatures there, if water consumption does not go down soon, there will be even stricter measures put in place. Hilgard Matthews, spokesperson for Johannesburg Water, is joining us via telephone to tell us more. http://www.expressoshow.com/
The current water shortage crisis plaguing large parts of Johannesburg and surrounds has seen businesses take a huge knock since last week. Although water has been restored in most areas, the economic knock-on will linger for some time to come.

December 21, 2012 We spent the afternoon at Sandton City, a huge shopping complex that is adjacent to Nelson Mandela Square. In the Square, you can also find the Sandton Public Library, which is very nice. If you have a long layover or, like us, are stuck at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you can easily go into the city by taking the Gautrain, a commuter train. Most of the stops are in residential areas, but if you want to do a bit of shopping, see a movie, etc., take the Gautrain from OR Tambo to Sandton City. You'll have to buy a Gold Card, which costs a one-time fee of 11 Rand, then add value to the card. A one-way trip from OR Tambo to Sandton City costs 115 Rand per person, which is pricey but still cheaper than taking a taxi. If you're staying at the Garden Court...
