Water shortages are becoming real for residents and actually drying out the taps. Over the weekend parts of Joburg and Tshwane were without water - reportedly as a result of restrictions from Rand Water. Midrand, Diepkloof and parts of Soweto were in danger of running dry today. Municipal authorities have pleaded with City of Joburg residents to reduce their water usage to avoid restrictions being increased to Level 3. To discuss we're joined by Hilgard Matthews from Joburg Water. For more news, visit: http://www.sabc.co.za/news

Sometimes a heavy enough cloudburst in Johannesburg will cause a flash flood down the Braamfontein Spruit. The bridge on Belgrave street is low enough to often get washed over. If you time it right, you can catch a great show. When I was very young my grandmother took me to watch the flood down the Spruit, so when my family and I got caught in a heavy cloudburst driving home from Johannesburg city, I decided to take my girlfriend and see if we could get to the bridge in time to watch it flood. This was the result, something I've now only seen twice in my life. I don't think the driver of the little blue car realized how quickly the water would rise. They very nearly got washed over, sadly they wouldn't have been the first, and I'm sure they wouldn't have been the last. Always be aware...

Residents around Johannesburg have been experiencing water shortages for almost two weeks now. Rand Water says it's unclear when water would be fully restored to parts of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni Metro's following shortages this week. Officials blamed the interruptions on power outages at some pumping stations.
About 100 suburbs in the Johannebsurg Metro will have reduced access to water for about 25 hours this weekend. Rand Water says water supply in suburbs across Johannesburg, Randburg, Roodepoort and Soweto will be affected. The cut takes place from early Saturday afternoon up to Sunday afternoon due to maintenance at the Eikenhof pump station. Rand Water will continue to supply water into the system at a reduced capacity, but there might be poor pressure and no water supply experienced in the affected areas.
